Restaurant Recommendations

On a cold, snowy Seattle saturday morning, [livejournal.com profile] seattlejo and I wandered down to Pikes Place Market, to have brunch at The Crumpet Shop

Hot tea, and very nice homemade crumpets. First round for me was a plain buttered crumpet, followed by a ham and egg crumpet. She had the ham, egg, and cream cheese crumpet, followed by maple butter, cream cheese, and walnut. I then had a VERY yummy maple butter crumpet, ( I cannot remember what her next one was though :-( ). We ended up splitting a Nutella one too.

The Lois McMaster Bujold fans on my list would be amused by the breakfast special of hot buttered groats in maple syrup, with your choice of oat/groat bread toast or a crumpet with preserves or maple butter. Sounds like a good Bararryan breakfast.......

Later in the day, in Seattle's International District, next to Uwajimaya, is a small shop called Samurai Noodle, specializing in real Japanese ramen.

Oh my goodness. SO good.

[livejournal.com profile] seattlejo had the tonkotsu (pork) broth "Samurai Armor Bowl" I had the shouyu (chicken) "Samurai Armor Bowl". Both came with a bowl of noodles, broth, and a side of pork cutlets, a flavored egg, bamboo shoots, nori, mushrooms, and green onion, to add into the ramen.

The broth was very light and flavorful, and the noodles, (I ended up getting extra noodles) were very good. They ask how you want the noodles cooked, we both opted for medium. Very nice meal on a cold snowy evening - and gave us enough energy to prowl the Japanese market and bookstore next to it, (with a really good Anime music selection.)

Lunch Sunday was Blue C Sushi in Fremont. I've always liked the plate by plate sushi places, and this one was particularly good, particularly the spider roll and the spicy tuna rolls. I should have tried a hand roll though. Next time. :-)

If it didn't have Samurai Armor in the bowl, I'd have sent it back. ;-)

Mmmm, ramen! Must try that place next time we're in Seattle.

What's the neighborhood near that weird convention center? There's a diner not far away called "Mecca." They try to be grimy and yucky to keep the tourists and college fratboys out, but their french fries are fucking amazing.

Next time you come out, go to House of Hong for dim sum, or Kau Kau for the BBQ pork. If you want a more chi chi sort of thing, I highly recommend The Dahlia Lounge. Did you go to Dusty Strings while you were in Fremont? If not, make that a stop next time, It's not far from Lenin and the troll. There is also the gargoyle store in Fremont too..

That's Queen Anne, I've never been to Mecca, but will add it to my list of places to check out.

I was tempted to take him to Serious Pie. If it was chi chi it would have been Brasa. (Love Tamara Murphy) Sadly Patrick did learn of my hatred for Kathy Casey as I hissed at her airport outlet each time we passed.

Dim Sum would have had us at the place that the poly dim sum is on Sundays, and this time we traded that option for homemade pancakes with my partners.

Dusty Strings was a sad story as we arrived apperantly after they were closing and couldnt get in. He was like a cute kid in the candy store window. I'd meant to give Lark in the Morning a pass on Monday, but was sadly distracted.

I haven't a clue as to where the poly folk meet up dim sum place is. I used to go to King Cafe on 7th and Maynard, but they closed a long time ago. Some of the gals I work with took me to House of Hong, and that is where I have gone ever since. I have been told Mashiko's on California is good for sushi, but I have never been there. I need to make a point to ask the neighbor guy where are good inexpensive sushi places are. I can get good grocery store sushi (not the best but decent) at Uwajimaya and at Metro Market. I could roll my own, but I am the only person here who eats it. Ah well :)

I didn't know Kathy Casey had a restaurant in the airport. I figure it's probably catered by Airmark, the folks who bring you airport "food" ;) I have never had her cooking, but a lot of her stuff doesn't much appeal to me. That and she is so damned perky that she is irritating.

Are you going to be at Norwes if Pat doesn't go? It would be kind of fun to meet up at some point, but with all the doctor and other garbage going on, I don't know what kind of time I will have.
