Urine for a treat.......

Honestly, I don't think MRE's are THAT bad.....

US army food... just add urine

"The US military has devised a way to ensure its troops in battle need never go hungry - with dried food that can be rehydrated using dirty water or urine.

The meal comes in a pouch that filters out 99.9% of most toxins, says New Scientist magazine.

The aim is to reduce the amount of water soldiers need to carry.

The firm behind it says soldiers should only use urine as last resort - as the membrane can not filter out urea, which in the long term causes kidney damage.

"The pouch - containing chicken and rice - relies on osmosis to filter the water or urine," the New Scientist Magazine reported."

Like I said, MRE's aren't that bad......

Seriously, this seems like a solution in search of a problem

That depends. Say you've just parted ways with your aircraft a few seconds before a heat-seeker mated with it's tailpipe. Between you and any rescue is a hundred miles of bone-dry desert, 10,000 guys who'd love to add a dust-off chopper to their kill list before getting around to you, and half the enemy air force. What you've got to live on is what came with you in your seat-pan and any local wildlife you can kill. The local wildlife, BTW, is mostly scorpions and snakes with the occasional small rodent for variety. 1 quart of water will last you a day, maybe, if you're careful. The same space and weight can hold 4 days worth of those rations, 5 if you stretch it. Which would you rather have?

These rations aren't for regular use (or at least, not when prepared that particular way). They're for use when the alternative is broiled rat or as much sand as you can chew.

That, or some number-pusher higher up saw the budget for water and said "Hey, if we could get these people to drink their own pee we could save X-million a year!". ;)
