The *illuminati*?????
Some people are a bit on the.....well, okay, a lot on the clueless side.
On a forum I read, someone posted a big long rant about the "dangers of aspertame". This looked like a cut and paste job, so I did some looking, more out of curiousity.
Snopes and Urban Legends was a good place to start. As was the NIH's PubMed
Then I got to looking at the people mentioned in this post. And quickly noticed it was a self-referencial group, as they cited each others work and almost nothing outside of said group. No peer review, no outside research, no nothing. One name was a doctorate in humanities and is one of the more leading and shrill voices against the "poison of aspertame". The word "crank" came to mind. There was also another Dr. who was a Ph.D. in Nutrition and a self-proclaimed "aspertame victim", who seemed more interested in promoting her "aspertame detoxification" programme and her book. And still another Ph.D. that quackwatch has an interesting article on.
One guy really, really really stood out. Namely "James D. Bowen, MD". Part of the reason he stood out was that he was an actual medical doctor. Or I should say he was, because his licence was revoked. And after reading some of his rants, I can see why:

He fails to mention WHY "International Zionism" would want to be producing a "Nazi biochemicalwarfare agent" though. Especially since aspertame wasn't even *invented* until 1965.
Then I found THIS gem!

You know, if I was promoting this kinda thing, I'd be checking the references I cite *very* carefully.
(chuckle), Oh, and their response then I pointed out their sources were a bit less than creditable? A reply screed about how I shouldn't trust "peer review" science, and that I need to "check out the real science". Complete with links that had *nothing* to do with what was being cited. Methinks I was dealing with a nutjob.......
