Ooookay......

A testament for Trekkies

"A PREACHER has decided to boldly go where no cleric has gone before by writing the gospel according to Star Trek.

Alyson Leslie, an Episcopalian lay pastor from Newport-on-Tay in Fife, hopes to spread the word of God by appealing to fans of the science fiction series.

Her Star Trek gospel provides a list of religious and moral parables that can be drawn from episodes of the programme, which celebrates its 40th birthday this year.

Leslie has already published her Testament for Trekkies on the internet and as a book in New Zealand. She is now in talks with British publishers"

Which is not hard to believe since lots of the plots (of the original series, anyway) were drawn from the bible, though not NEARLY as often as was done with Hercules and Xena!

This is not a new concept. A couple in my eWorld trek forum a decade ago were Unitarian ministers and used Star Trek references in their sermons, we used to discuss it all the time.

Going rather further back, for that matter, according to the Gospels, Jesus was a big fan of using contemporary stories to teach lessons. This is just following the example. Highly traditional!

Star Trek was all about metaphor anyway. People didn't often realize that they were the ones being lectured, from 60's anti-war storie to 90's anti-fundamentalist-sect story arcs in Deep Space Nine. And using sci-fi metaphor, they could truly bitch-slap the fundamentalist Christians and Muslims with the same storyline. Now that is Social Performance Art!
