Observation

In nature, often the animal that gets to procreate is not necessarily the strongest or the fittest, but the one that has the brightest plumage or the best mating dance.

Basically, it's not really survival of the fittest, but more like survival of the advertised.

Something else to keep in mind, if it helps any. Just spawning isn't enough for evolutionary success. You have to keep the kids alive to when they're reproductive age and hopefully give them enough resources to survive and compete on their own. So there's a lot of folks who look to be successful right now, but check on them in 10-20 years and they've become a dead end.
