MCI re-established phone service to my residence in Lakeside, so I now have dial-up again.

Painfully slow dial-up. Which is all I can get in this area, (no DSL, no cable, and the park won't allow sat dishes).

Still, better than nothing. Amazing how spoiled I got after a year of broadband......

You will get it figured out, and I am sure you will get a better connection, and possibly yet another move once you get a permanent job.

Uhhh. Unless it has changed in the last few years, federal law actually forbids a property owner from preventing small dish installation for television service (and thus, presumably internet connection as well) by the resident. This assumes you'd really want the masochism involved in pressing the issue.

Of course this is an academic point as, at least in the case of bi-directional satellite communications, the price versus performance of satellite internet services blows dead penguins. None of the satellite services are worth the cost of entry.

If you could get a decent deal on terrestrial return it might be a decent temporary solution (not considering the park's dish prejudice).

At one time a couple of companies were offering wireless broadband in San Diego county, dunno if this is still true or not. Even a couple of years ago the cost was only slightly absurd. Good luck sorting it all out though.

I can empathize: the park here doesn't have cable, or broadband, nor do any of the wireless services penetrate here, at least partly because of the necessity of interfering with airport electronics. I AM allowed a satellite dish, although I wonder if I'd be allowed bi-directional satellite this close to the airport. Moot point: it was too bloody expensive, even if the performance was perfect (as stated by the sales people).

The optical fibre is in, all the little holes and trenches filled, and Real Soon Now they'll let me know I can sign up for it. Until then, dialup is once again the very pinnacle of online technology. [rolling eyes]
