Sad to say, but these actions are quite typical for members of the military. The superiority complex and xenophobia (not to mention homophobia - see usage of "faggot" in the story) ground into each of them by their training is never deprogrammed, and reveals itself in inappropriate and often violent ways, especially when alcohol is involved.
