Obituaries: Esther Mitgang; Madeleine L’Engle

"Author Madeleine L’Engle died last night in Connecticut, at the age of 89. Best known for her 1963 Newbery Award winner A Wrinkle in Time and its sequels, L’Engle was the author of more than 60 books for adults and young readers, most of which were published by FSG. This spring, the Square Fish imprint of Holtzbrinck reissued L'Engle's Time Quintet in new editions."

*Sigh* A childhood favorite has passed on.

While I admit I lost some respect for L'Engle in 1999 when she ghost-wrote the book "She Said Yes: The Unlikely Martyrdom of Cassie Bernall", (which promoted the known lie that Cassie Bernall was supposely "martyred" for her faith in Columbine), I still loved - and reread to this day - the "Time" Quartet.

Rest in peace.

omg.. I'm so sad. I have loved Madeleine L'Engle since I was 8 years old when I first read "A Wrinkle In Time". From that moment forward I fell in love with sci-fi/fantasy, and specifically her books. I have a full shelf dedicated to her books, and I have already purchased copies of the Time Quartet and the Austin's books for Lunea. One of my most treasured books is a first edition of "A Wrinkle In Time".

Madeleine L'Engle inspires thousands if not millions of young people, bringing to life the mystery, adventure and love of the sciences. "Arm Of The Starfish" and "A Ring Of Endless Light" were some of my favorite books that I have re-read as an adult and still love.

I will definitely mourn her passing.

I'm interested that this article (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070907/ap_on_re_us/obit_l_engle) states that she died at 88, not 89, as your link specifies. Also, your snippet speaks of a quintet of Time books, but you refer to a quartet in agreement with the linked article.

A very sad day for literature in all cases.

There's the traditional trilogy (Wrinkle, Door and Planet), Many Waters which is about the Murray twins and then another one (I can't remember the name) also set in the same universe about a girl who gets unstuck in time and has to fix a problem before she can get home - it's been a loooooong time since I read that one.
