Milestones.....

There are several heartwarming milestones in being the parent of a little girl. That first smile, the first steps, the first day at school, the first time she figures out how to use a mouse and keyboard, the first amine series she falls for, the first time she picks up a boffer sword and proceeds to wallop the kid she's fighting.....

You know, proper, important milestones.

Today was one of those milestones. Little Bit lost the second of her front teeth.

So to celebrate, she got something I got for her earlier today in waiting that she's wanted.

Her first "real" Lego set. (As opposed to duplos)

Yep, she's my girl......

I'm jealous. She's getting exactly what I wanted as a little girl [g]. I had to go down the street and play with the Legos and Matchbox cars belonging to the little boy there, because those weren't "girls' toys."

*smile* I try to be.

I look at it this way. Society does a good job at enforcing gender roles anyway. What I can do is quietly (and not so quietly) reinforce the idea that she's not limited by what society thinks.

She's got her girly moments. Her fondness for pink. Her addiction to groovy girl dolls, (which I don't mind, I dislike barbie and neither her mother or I approve of "Bratz" in the slightest. Groovy Girls look like little girls, rather than high-fashion escorts) Other "girly" things. But she also likes Bob the Builder, Legos, and has a passion for Trains, Airplanes, and things like that. She knows she's a girl, but is cheerfully unconcerned that something she likes may or may not be "girly".

This is not a bad thing to reinforce.

It's amazing what a difference forty years will make [g].

That said, I must have had a rather schizophrenic childhood -- I wasn't allowed the toys I spoke of, but one of my earliest memories is being given a hammer (a real one, if small) and a piece of wood with some nails driven about halfway in to play with. And one of my most cherished birthday presents (I was nine, I think) was the makings for balsa fishing lures. My father and I spent some very pleasant rainy afternoons in the garage sanding and painting and so forth. We caught fish with 'em, too.
