Don't these people have anything BETTER to do?? Like, oh, I dunno, make sure that people in the services get the equipment they need and the benefits they deserve?? Instead they have to spew this TRIPE??

Congressman Broun Introduces Anti-Pornography Legislation - Broun: “The ‘Military Honor and Decency Act’ will right a bureaucratic--and moral--wrong.”

"“As a Marine, I am deeply concerned for the welfare of our troops and their mission,” said Broun. “Allowing the sale of pornography on military bases has harmed military men and women by: escalating the number of violent, sexual crimes; feeding a base addiction; eroding the family as the primary building block of society; and denigrating the moral standing of our troops both here and abroad. Our troops should not see their honor sullied so that the moguls behind magazines like Playboy and Penthouse can profit. The ‘Military Honor and Decency Act’ will right a bureaucratic--and moral--wrong.”

Congressman Broun’s legislation makes the following specific changes to current law:

·         Modifies the current definition of sexually explicit, to lower the threshold required to deem material sexually explicit.
·         Adds a new definition of “principal theme” which makes it clear to the DoD that the threshold has been lowered.
·         Adds a definition of “lascivious” that is broader than what is included in the DoD Instruction on the sale of sexually explicit material.
·         Adds a definition of “nudity” that makes it much more difficult for the DoD’s Resale Activities Board of Review (RABR) to approve the sale of sexually explicit material.
·         Requires that DoD annually review material that is not currently deemed sexually explicit (and therefore allowed) to determine if it should be prohibited. RABR failed to meet a single time between FY 2000 and 2005."

Ironic this is coming from a Marine, whose freedoms in combat zones are head and shoulders above the Army's already, including the (regulated) consumption of alcohol, something the Army utterly forbids. Kiss the retention rate goodbye; we signed on to be destroyers of nations, not mullahs. Save morals for your pulpit, Congressman, not for the barracks.

RABR not meeting between 2000 and 2005? Maybe because there was a war. Jackass Jarhead.

So he wants to (further) curtail the freedoms of the people overseas WHO ARE FIGHTING FOR OURS AND OTHER PEOPLE'S FREEDOM by pulling Playboy (and probably 98% of all romance novels) off the shelves? When that is often the ONLY place they can buy something in English? As for bases here in the US, they can go down to the corner store and buy the same stuff, so why not let the military MAKE A LITTLE MONEY BY SELLING IT THEMSELVES?

Yeah, that makes complete sense. NOT.

If he never went out on an actual deployment, he might think that...

He might think that...

Forget it. Who the fuck knows what he might think. This is the kind of crap that makes me reluctant to say I'm a Republican, though.

(He could actually talk to the troops, but I guess that's too hard.)

We can't trust these soldiers, sailors and Marines to have self-control; the military removed all vestiges of self-control, will, or personality from them at boot camp, and now everything they come into contact with shapes their personality. If they read anything remotely sexually explicit (or, for that matter, implicit) they will react the same way the Congressman does: they will have a strong, overwhelming urge to rape something.

This is the same reason gays aren't allowed in the military. If a Marine were to find out that a fellow Marine harbored homosexual tendencies, he might think that being gay was the right way to be, and overnight the barracks would turn into a Plato's retreat homoerotic lovefest. And we can't have that!

I would think the military would be trying to encourage base additions, in order to keep their retention rate up. Or are the soldiers just hanging around the barracks and not going on patrol?
