Houston eyes cameras at apartment complexes

"Houston's police chief on Wednesday proposed placing surveillance cameras in apartment complexes, downtown streets, shopping malls and even private homes to fight crime during a shortage of police officers.

"I know a lot of people are concerned about Big Brother, but my response to that is, if you are not doing anything wrong, why should you worry about it?" Chief Harold Hurtt told reporters Wednesday at a regular briefing."

This was one of my favourite used bookstores in San Diego too.....

Fire damages landmark bookstore in S.D.

"A landmark bookstore and two other downtown San Diego businesses were heavily damaged in a fire yesterday that sent thick, brown smoke pouring onto Broadway in the middle of the day.

The fire apparently started in a back room on the first floor of 70-year-old Wahrenbrock's Book House, igniting hundreds of books, newspapers, maps and posters stacked floor to ceiling. It quickly spread smoke to Cleo's Hair Gallery and Superfly Custom Tattoo & Pro.

“There were 8-foot flames inside,” said Chris Halpin, 28, a chef at Hillcrest Sushi Itto who was shopping in Wahrenbrock's for a sushi book."

The Hobbit in Irish • An Hobad as Gaeilge

PRESS RELEASE

Bilbo Baggins, Gandalf the wizard, the dwarves, Smaug the dragon -- soon you will be able to read about them all in Irish -- and about all the other characters in Tolkien's children’s classic, The Hobbit, or There and Back Again.

An Irish-language version entitled An Hobad, nó Go Ceann Scríbe agus Ar Ais Arís is in preparation at the moment. The translator is Nicholas Williams, who has recently translated Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking-glass and What Alice Found There, both of which received high praise from Irish-speakers.

An Hobad will be published by Evertype, Westport, County Mayo, and it is hoped that it will appear before the end of 2005. The translation will contain Tolkien's original illustrations.

The Hobbit begins with the famous first sentence "In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit." This is how Williams renders the whole paragraph:

"I bpoll sa talamh a bhí cónaí ar hobad. Níor pholl gránna, salach, fliuch é, lán le giotaí de phéisteanna agus le boladh láibe. Níor pholl tirim, lom, gainmheach a bhí ann ach an oiread, gan aon rud ann le n-ithe ná le suí síos air; poll hobaid ab ea é agus is ionann sin agus compord."

PREAS-RÁITEAS

Biolbó Baigín, Gandalf draoi, na habhaic, Smóg an dragan -- ní fada go mbeifear in ann léamh fúthu uile as Gaeilge agus faoi na carachtair eile sa chlasaic do pháistí a scríobh J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit, or There and Back Again.

Tá leagan Gaeilge faoin teideal An Hobad, nó Go Ceann Scríbe agus Ar Ais Arís á ullmhú i láthair na huaire. Is é Nicholas Williams an t-aistritheoir, an duine a chuir Gaeilge le gairid ar Eachtraí Eilíse i dTír na nIontas agus ar Lastall den Scáthán agus a bhFuair Eilís Ann Roimpi le Lewis Carroll, dhá aistriúchán a fuair ardmholadh ó phobal na Gaeilge.

Is é Evertype, Cathair na Mart, Contae Mhaigh Eo, an foilsitheoir agus táthar ag súil go mbeidh an leabhar amuigh roimh dheireadh 2005. Bainfear feidhm san eagrán Gaeilge as na maisiúcháin a rinne Tolkien féin.

Is leis an abairt cháiliúil "In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit" a thosaíonn an bunleagan Béarla. Seo an chéad alt ar fad in aistriúchán Williams:

"I bpoll sa talamh a bhí cónaí ar hobad. Níor pholl gránna, salach, fliuch é, lán le giotaí de phéisteanna agus le boladh láibe. Níor pholl tirim, lom, gainmheach a bhí ann ach an oiread, gan aon rud ann le n-ithe ná le suí síos air; poll hobaid ab ea é agus is ionann sin agus compord."

Dinner tonight was the third type of Quorn I got, the garlic and herb "filets", which I fixed along with garlic button mushrooms. (I thought about chicken and mushroom rice-a-roni, but decided it didn't have garlic in it.)

So far, the worse I can say about Quorn is that the regular "filets" are pretty bland. The garlic and herb ones are quite good though. And the mushrooms were excellent.

Very dinnerlike

The description says "Day Of The Dead Teacher In Classroom Mexican FolkArt". Based on what the teacher is wearing, I'd have to say the classroom is Starfleet's Redshirt Training course.......
