Holy Cow! Meat-loving calf eats Indian chickens

"When dozens of chickens went missing from a remote West Bengal village, everyone blamed the neighbourhood dogs.

But Ajit Ghosh, the owner of the missing chickens, eventually solved the puzzle when he caught his cow -- a sacred animal for the Hindu family -- gobbling up several of them at night.

"We were shocked to see our calf eating chickens alive," Ghosh told Reuters by phone from Chandpur village, about 240 km (150 miles) northwest of capital Kolkata.

The family decided to stand guard at night on Monday at the cow shed which also served as a hen coop, after 48 chickens went missing in a month.

"Instead of the dogs, we watched in horror as the calf, whom we had fondly named Lal, sneak to the coop and grab the little ones with the precision of a jungle cat," Gour Ghosh, his brother, said."

Horizon must REALLY be scraping the bottom of the barrel to get runners like this.....

Elf defence for 'lingerie thief'

"Robert Boyd, 45, from Broadlands in Carrickfergus, is accused of holding up staff at the Orchid shop in Belfast disguised in a wig, hat and glasses.

He told the court he had been involved in a role-playing game at the time, and his character was an elf named Beho.

He denies robbery but says he may have blurred reality and fantasy.

He also said it "could be right" that Beho had intended to rob the shop - although he told the jury he could not remember what was going through his mind at the time.

He told defence counsel Anthony Cinnamond that within his small social circle he had been participating in a game known as Shadowrun.

The game was set in the future and the assumed characters were criminals, he said.

He told the court his character was a shaman, or magical elf, who carried a small Japanese sword as a weapon."

Was funny while it lasted...

Our donkey in hotel room case makes an ass of the world

"Our fictitious court case in last week’s paper in which a man was allegedly found in a Galway hotel room dressed in latex, handcuffs, and accompanied by a donkey, made an ass out of hundreds of thousands of webusers last week forcing our website to crash.

The fake case which featured in last week’s issue of Galway First was headlined “Lonely man brought donkey to hotel room, court told” and told the story of a South Galway man who had managed to smuggle the donkey past a gullible receptionist telling her it wa s a very big rabbit.

In the space of two days, more than one million people online had read the article from the Galway First website (www.galwayfirst.ie) or shared it online, with many news organisations around the world running it as a true story.

The case was featured on the Galway Worst satirical pages in our newspaper, but online readers have been convinced that the case really happened.

This led to the story being run as a true story on the Metro in London as well as on reputable news sites in the US and Germany. More than 50 affiliated TV stations in the US ran it as a true story in their “and finally” section at the end of their news bulletins.

Our office took more than 40 calls from newsrooms in Australia and Canada as newsteams struggled to verify the story.

It tells the story of how a man brought the donkey into the Galway hotel and dressed himself in latex and handcuffs, before the donkey ran amok in the hotel, rousing guests and leading to gardai being called."
