When commenting about the upcoming My Little Streetwalker Bratz movie, I was reminded of one of the funniest thing I saw while in Qatar.

Namely being in the Doha Toys R Us, watching little Qatari girls in Islamic headscarves and robes buying carts full of those things, all under mommy and daddy's beaming approval.......

Seriously, Bratz seemed to the most popular fashion doll with Fulla and Barbie tying for second place. Major mixed messages.......

Shakespeare gets comic treatment (BBC News)

"The appetite of publishers for comic book - or graphic novel - versions of Shakespeare plays seems undimmed. But is this a valid way of introducing the Bard to new readers?

One new UK publishing house, Self Made Hero, is offering "Manga Shakespeare" - cut-down versions of some of the plays, in a Japanese cartoon style.

They are drawn by established manga artists, the characters acquiring the typical big bright eyes and cute little noses of the form.

Its first productions are Romeo and Juliet and Hamlet, with Richard III and The Tempest coming this autumn and others to follow.

Romeo and Juliet, the blurb explains, is set in modern-day Japan.

Can the youngsters' forbidden love survive "as violence, betrayal and tragedy explode on the streets of Tokyo?"

German dialect studied in Texas

"When Hans Boas came to the University of Texas from California in 2001 to teach German, he stopped in the Hill Country town of Fredericksburg, which embraces its German roots with a robust Oktoberfest and German-themed restaurants and shops.

While eating "der Hamburger" at lunch, Boas overheard an "interesting sounding German" — one that sounded a bit odd to him as a native speaker of the language. It was sprinkled with English words and phrases pronounced with a German accent, and some phrases that sounded German but weren't quite right.

What he heard was "Texas German," a unique dialect that developed as German settlers came to central Texas in the 1840s. But the people who speak it are dying, so Boas is working to document the dialect before it's too late."

Blueberry Poutine

2 cups water
2 cups sugar
2 cups crushed blueberries
1/3 cup vegetable shortening
1 egg
1 teaspoon almond extract
1 teaspoon baking powder
3/4 cup milk
2 cups flour

Bring water to boil in a medium saucepan. Add 1 1/2 cups sugar and berries. Mix well.

In a medium bowl, blend together remaining sugar and next six ingredients to make a dough. Drop the dough by heaping teaspoonful into boiling berry mixture.

Allow dumplings to cook about four minutes, then flip them to cook another four minutes.

Spoon into bowls to serve. Yields 4 to 6 servings.

(note, recipe is from Cajun country. I suspect they have a different meaning for "poutine" than those north of them do.....:-)
