Well, *that* was amusing...

Wonder if this was an example of "effective communciations" as taught in that dammed class. Or if they're going to somehow figure it's my fault for *making threats*
Many of you have read about one of my worse problem children. The one who borrows equipment without asking, who has broken two laptops and had a third stolen from her, who has an attitude that makes one want to pet her with a tire iron, and thinks her shit doesn't stink.
Came into my office after a potty break. Immediately notice a laptop is missing. Now all lab laptops are marked with the lab name and name of the laptop. If it's not marked, it's not lab property.
Find out that problem child took laptop out of my office, before leaving for the day.
Look up problem child's cell phone number, call her. I ask politely if she has the laptop that was on my desk in my office. She says yes. I ask her to please bring back that laptop immediately. She says "No, I need it for this research" I start to explain why it needs to be back, when she says "I don't have time for your whining" and hangs up on me. I call her back, and get her voice mail. This is the message I leave, both on voice mail and in email:
"Hello again. As I was about to explain to you before we were disconnected, I need that laptop back immediately. Laptops that are lab property are marked such and are available for checkout via the signout sheet on my office wall. The laptop you have is not lab property. In fact, it's my personal property, bought and paid for with my money, and as such I did not loan it to you for any reason. I will let (the office manager) and (her research team leader) know that you took my personal property out of my office without my knowledge and approval.
It is now 3:00pm. If I do not have my laptop back in my hands by 5:00pm, I will assume you do not wish to return my property, and I will call the San Diego Police Department, and file charges against you for theft. As my laptop is around $1400 or so in value, this would possibly make it grand theft. I will both file and persecute such charges against you if my property is not returned.
When you do return my laptop, I will require you to stay long enough to go over my laptop for any damages that might have occured. Needless to say, you will be held responsible should any damage happen to my laptop, or replacement if it goes missing. We will also go over the proper check out procedures for lab equipment, so that you will better be able to follow said procedures in the future.
I await your call so that I know when to expect you and my laptop back."
The clock is ticking. Wonder what will happen.
