Spent part of yesterday hiking a closed section of Old Highway 80, east of San Diego. (the Wildwood Glen section.)

Part of it is just recently closed due to the wildfires, and the two-lane concete is in very good condition. Road dates on the concete are 1931.

Past the closed mark, about 1/2 to 1 mile past, is the old road bed. The concete is gone here, and is little more than a dirt track. I stopped at the remains of a small rest area and found part of a grape sode bottle from 1939 here. The fires burned away the underbrush and you can see all the rusted cans thrown over the side of the road. I walked this path until it came to boulders and a fence, beyond which is a portion of I-8 that was blasted though the old Highway 80 roadbed. Then I walked back to my car - up hill. Ugh. My left leg is fine, but today my right knee hurts like blazes

On the way back, I went along the 1917 bridge. This stretch of road still has a portion of the oldest highway route, but it was superceded by the 1950's bridge, (which in turn was superceded by I-8)

Then home, and a shower before Mystery Junkyard Theatre
