Interesting story on how the US Air Force could have won a Nobel Prize........except for classification

Strange but True

In a nutshell, a USAF Officer, 20 years career, who had been a navigator and later went into radar, was at Clear AFB in 1967, and found a fluctuating signal. He logged it, next day found it four minutes early, which indicated a celestial source. He looked, found several more, some of which were fluctuating or pulsating.

He asked what he should do, was told it was not in their mission, so the sources were noted as background and they went back to normal duties.

A few months later, he saw 1968 issues of Nature - which detailed the recent discovery of pulsars.........

To make matters even more amusing?? Some DEW stations were finding pulsar signs as far back as 1964! All classified as not to give away DEW abilities.
