I don't have a problem with vegetarians. It's not a choice for me, (my body can't handle non-animal protein very well, and the most I could be and stay healthy would be ovo-lacto), but I don't object to people who are.

And I don't object to people who are vegans, again, personal choice, as long as they don't get in my face about it, I don't care. Just don't threaten my health by trying to force me on such a diet.

However, I cannot handle those who are either ignorant enough, or fanatical enough, to put their dogs and cats on a vegan diet. People, dogs and cats are *carnivores*, not omnivores like we are, and not herbivores. Unless you're supplimenting the hell out of their diet, it's not safe for the dog or cat, it's not healthy for them, and it's not humane either.

The reason for this rant is this post on the subject I read in [livejournal.com profile] stupidpetowners via [livejournal.com profile] mock_the_stupid.

(SIGH)

I have a vegan friend that's decided not to own a cat because they are carnivores. I think she has made a responsible decision about this issue. Your point is a good one - dogs and cats are carnivores.

I think your friend made a very responsible decision in that regard.

I have one set of friends who own a big beuitful dog, who any form of animal proteen makes him sick! Luckly they figured it out when he was a puppy or he would of died very young. Now they do go out of their way, with a special perscription dog food, made just for him.

I think it is stupid to feed an animal meant to eat meat, who would do so naturaly by hunting a vegan diet. Exspecially a cat who is likely to be catching birds and mice anyways.

This isn't quite true, at least as far as dogs are concerned. Cats are carnivores, absolutely. Of course they can eat other things as a treat; my evil Siamese [livejournal.com profile] badira likes fruit.

Dogs, on the other hand, are omnivores. How omnivorous they are depends on the breed. Large dogs do well with a varied diet; many thrive when a proportion of their food is pasta and others do well with vegetables. However, they do need that meat.

Many little dogs, on the other hand, are more like cats in that their diet should be almost all meat. Steve was talking to a Neopolitan Mastiff breeder who said that his puppies eat nothing but raw meat, but they can eat pasta too as adults.

My mom's cat *loves* cantalope. We can actually get him to sit for cantalope. It's pretty cute. And the cat is huge - about 20 pounds or more.

These idjits are crueler to their dogs and cats than the carnavores whom they revile. Pfui.

If vegetarians eat vegetables, what do humanitarians eat?
