Snack round up

Three things on the Snack Round Up list today.

The first is Cocoa Chex Mix (Winter Edition).

This is a mix of frosted mini chex, holiday pretzels, (with an almost cocoa krispie type coating), vanilla sticks, and mini-marshmallows. I suppose they're supposed to be like a cup of hot cocoa. That being said, they're really quite good. I brought some over to the party saturday, and both me and selenesue seemed to like them. (And Teagan the wonder puppy was happy with the ones on the floor she got to before we could stop her.)

The next is Hershey's new "Take Five" bar.

This is a mix of pretzels, peanuts, peanut butter, caramel, and milk chocolate. The result is this salty/sweet/nutty/gooey thing that tastes *wonderful*. Gave one to a friend who snarfs down chocolate-covered peanut butter pretzels when she's got PMS, and she said she wants a box of these around next time she's got it.

I don't have PMS, but it's really good anyway.

Last, and least, is something that shouldn't exist, and yet does.

I'm talking about Hostess Fruitcake.

Yes, the same people who brought us twinkies has also brought us the twinkie holiday cousin, their take on fruitcake.

Now I realize there are people who can make edible fruitcakes. There are some people can make wonderful tasting ones that don't feel like they needed rebar and concrete.

Then there's what people normally get, the blocks of pre-stressed density that doesn't decompose, but erodes.

Then there's hostess, who makes snack cakes that doesn't have a shelf life, they have a half-life. And into this, they bring not one, but two different fruitcakes for your snacking pleasure (?).

The first is a small cake, shaped much like a twinkie, smelling much like a twinkie, and tasting - well, like a twinkie that had an emergency creamectomy and had green and red fruit transplanted into it instead. Was just as nasty and vile as a regular twinkie was, but without that creamy gunk in the middle.

Then they make the block o' fruitcake, a one pound bar solid enough to be used for personal defense. I can't say I've gotten up enough nerve to try this yet. I'm not sure I'll ever have enough nerve.

Hostess made (might still make for all I know) the best fruitcake I've ever had. It was a round, ring-shaped fruitcake that came in a fancy tin. EXCELLENT stuff.

Unfortunately, my ban on sugar means no fruitcake for me. (Cries)

The first two definitely sound worth trying. As for fruitcake, i'll stick to what I grew up with -- Claxton. Not that i keep it on hand like my parents did/do, but it's not bad.

I thought Take Five was an old candy bar. Maybe they brought it back? Had sections with different fillings. Will look for this in the next day or so, or else maybe you could bring some for New Year's because I Am Not Cooking.

Spotted a Take 5 display on my way back from San Jose last weekend -- very tasty! I suspect they're being test-marketed, as most places i stopped didn't have them. Didn't see the cocoa chex mix, but wasn't looking that hard; could've missed it.

I'm still hooked on Snickers Munch bars, though.
