The SCA Chirurgeon's list is having a discussion on heat stroke treatment. One chirurgeon, who is a USAF flight surgeon, commented on the "Parris Island Protocol" for treating suspected heat stroke during Marine Basic Training, which starts off such:

"1. During physical training, the clinic routinely maintains a dedicated room with two bathtubs full of cold water and ice. In the field, the blouse and pants are removed from a collapsed suspected heatstroke patient; the shorts and T-shirt remain on. Rectal temperature is measured, ice is packed around the groin and axillary areas, and the patient is immediately transported to the clinic on a stretcher. On arrival, the stretcher is placed on top of the iced bathtub above the water and ice, with the carrying handles sticking out at both ends. Mental status and other vital signs are assessed, and blood is drawn for laboratory analyses."

To which another chirurgeon said:

"Guys, while I appreciate the information, I suspect we might have very negative results if we were to take some overheated Duke, pull his pants off, pack his groin with ice, shove a thermometer up his ass, and drop him in an icewater bath ;-) While I admit it would be worth watching, and there are a few people I can think it would be beneficial for, whether or not they have a serious heat stress injury, I suspect that such aggressive treatment might just cause us a few problems on the field ;-)"

(Chuckle) I don't want to be the chirurgeon treating said duke

But I'd want to watch it happen. Hell, with some of the Orkneys, I'd sell tickets and popcorn

Sheesh, what part of "It builds character" don't they understand? :)

They might also look into the origins of the phrase "suck it up."

I can think of any number of hot heads on the field at a war that this might be useful for, heatstroke or not . . . mind you, the last time I had similar, if not quite so severe, you DID place ice packs under my arms and on my pulse points.

Great story! If you haven't done so already, you should post it over on the main Bujold list [with a subject line mentioning the Miles riff, perhaps]. Chortles would ensue over there too.
