I really can't say I think much or well of Windows XP, (though I'm wishing someone would port Trillian to OS X). It seems to be happier now that I've added 512MB more to it though.

However, I have to credit HP for some fairly smart hardware design.

Example one is are the access panels on the bottom. Three screws and you've accessed the memory bay. Three more and the hard drive is right there for removal.

Example two is the fact they included *three* power cords in the box. A UK-style two-prong, a US-style three-prong fused, (which is one of the most common here), and a US-style three-prong grounded. For an expat like me, this is a *nice* touch. (though I suspect the English / Arabic keyboard is gonna get me some strange looks when I return to the states)

Some of the special command buttons along the top are nice, (I have a simular keyboard to that on my G4)

It's not bad hardware design. I almost wish I could get a developers copy of OS X for intel for it though.......

Yeah, 1G of RAM is better than 512 for XP nowadays, especially on a laptop where the hard drive is likely to be slow. As for screws, my Acer only has one to release the laptop and two to access the memory bay. Unfortunately, if there's a mini-pci slot, I'm not sure I could get to it without disassembing the whole unit. THere may just not be a slot, which would suck since I'm having problems with the Centrino wireless. Only 2 special command buttons, though.

Everybody talks about how bad XP is - and I can see it isn't great. I just get frustrated that I have no real alternative. Yeah, the techie types say Linux is so great. But I don't know how to use it, and there's nobody willing to teach me. Frankly, I think techies LIKE people like me being ignorant of Linux and intimidated by it - I think a lot of them enjoy the feeling of exclusivity and elitism it gives them. And it sounds like a lot of what I use a computer for isn't available on Linux. So it's frustrating, and I'm stuck.

Since only authorized individuals are supposed to have dev copies of x86-OSX (those who've leased an Appple x86 machine from Apple) there's no legit way to obtain a copy. Based upon that fact I officially do *not* have a copy of x86-OSX. That being said, would you like me *not* to send the copy of x86-OSX that I *don't* have?

Adium does the same thing as Trillian for OS X.

Yes and no. I have Adium and use it sometimes. But, it's based on the GAIM library, and unlike Trillian, gaimlib doesn't support audio and video yet. Trilliam does.

Otherwise, I'd say Adium rocks.
