Oookay.....
Nov. 10th, 2005 02:11 pmI saw (and posted) the video about the woman who had pole-vaulted past religious extremism to sheer insanity.
Since I don't get the show in question, I hadn't heard about her until I saw that video.
Turns out her name is Marguerite Perrin, and Wikipedia has an entry on her. She and her family live in Ponchatula, Louisiana, much, it seems to several resident's discomfort.
What caught my attention was this line:
"Marguerite Perrin initially refused the $50,000 prize money because the second family on Trading Spouses, the Fox camera crew, and the money were, in her words, "tainted" and "dark-sided." Later, Perrin accepted the money after being promised $20,000 for gastric bypass surgery."
(shakes head) Personally, I don't believe she's religious, but rather is psychotic and using religion as a framework for her psychosis. I think, sad to say, she's in dire need of mental help, and needs therapy far more than GBS.
And that's simply on one clip.
Wow.
I know people who are real Christians. Many are my friends. Some are more than simply friends. I respect their beliefs. And, despite this woman's words, I can't see her as anything other than hate-filled and in dire need of help. Certainly I can't call her a Christian without insulting those I hold dear that are of that faith.
If I understand how this show works correctly, each woman goes to live with the other family for a period of time. I don't know anything about the other family, (other than supposely they're "new agey" or something like that), and can just imagine the feelings they had in dealing with this woman. And as for the Perrin family, they have my deepest sympathies, and my hopes that, as embarassing as this may have been for them, it is the spark they needed to get their mother - and hopefully themselves, into some form of treatment.

Date: 2005-11-10 04:32 pm (UTC)In the show, as long as Margeurite was the center of attention, she was mostly okay. As soon as she had to share the spotlight, watch out! Temper tantrums of three-year-olds don't hold a candle to her shout fests. And yeah, she's not as much Christian as she is "religious control freak". She really just could not tolerate anything that was not part of her narrow-minded world view.
The other family is very new agey. They're both astrologers, celebrate solstices, are into psychics, crystals, mandalas, etc. They seem very open minded, if a bit granola crunchy. They seemed a touch irresponsible at times to me, but I've seen much worse. They, um, tolerated Marguerite. When she went off, they kinda just stood around, looked at each other to say "she's nuts!" and went on their with their business. Apparently next episode she's going to try and teach them to be godly, but I expect it will roll off their backs like water on a duck's.
One of the scariest bits of the first episode was when the new age mom was meeting Marguerite's neighborhood friends. Apparently they have a weekly get together at the Perrin household. The women were the most judgemental "holier than thou" bitches I've ever seen. They mocked everything about the new age woman's beliefs, and did it to her face. They honestly take a great deal of pride in being judgemental and closed-minded. It was disgusting!
The most amusing thing about the whole show is the halloween type music they played any time they had Marguerite on, or when dealing with the "conservative christian" reaction to something outside of their small minds. Michael and I laughed every time they started playing the organ and harpsichord laden spooky music.
JOhn.
