Don't get me wrong, I miss San Diego.

Still......

San Diego Dethrones Itself As Finest City

"America's Finest City? Not any more.

One of its congressmen admitted taking $2.4 million in bribes, the FBI has investigated City Hall, the mayor resigned, a $1.37 billion pension shortfall damaged the city's credit rating and fueled talk of bankruptcy, and two councilmen were convicted of taking bribes from a strip club owner.

Faced with all that ill repute, the city has quietly dethroned itself and dropped the self-proclaimed title "America's Finest City" from its official Web site.

"We couldn't stake that claim anymore," said Gina Lew, the city's director of public and media affairs. "We were taking too many hits."

The San Diego Union-Tribune recently asked readers to coin a new slogan, saying "America's Finest" had turned "creaky." Among the nearly 500 responses: "Scandalicious," "An Eruption of Corruption," "All Major Unmarked Bills Accepted Here," and "Bunglers by the Bay."</cite<

Oh, that's sad. IMNSHO, San Diego is STILL America's finest city, and I wouldn't live anywhere else!

(well, actually, I live just outside San Diego, in the city of Lemon Grove... dubbed "The Best Climate on Earth".) [grin]

Seriously, though, when Mayor Sanders takes office in a few weeks, he's going to be firing a lot of top management in the city. I'm betting it's some of that management that made the decision to remove the slogan.

I think the first thing he needs to do is order it to be put back on the page.

(FYI: one of those two councilmen had his conviction thrown out by the Judge. Inzunza is going to serve 21 months, but Zucchet is free as a bird now and headed for the private sector.)

I'm trying to remember when that title was first claimed. Wasn't it only shortly after the Curran administration went down in the Yellow Cab scandal? Or was it later, when Wilson was mayor?

Yeah, I'm an expat San Diegan too.

I understand it was during Wilson's term in office, to soften the blow when the GOP moved their convention from San Diego to Florida
