The BBC on the June 6 2006 hoopla.....
"The Nick of time"
"The Temple of Set takes a more solemn view. This is another breakaway from the Church of Satan, claiming a history of several thousand years, and "formally incorporated in 1975 CE".
Louise Renard is a priestess and assistant to the executive director in London. "There is nothing significant about that day or that number" she says. "Unless the new Omen movie turns out to be better than expected."

Revelations 13:18 (King James Translation)- Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number [is] Six hundred threescore [and] six
or this for reference:
Revelations 13:18 (Latin Vulgate Translation) hic sapientia est qui habet intellectum conputet numerum bestiae numerus enim hominis est et numerus eius est sescenti sexaginta sex
I like the gematric calculation for Nero's name but it's a stretch. I've seen several attempts at using gematria to divine the identity of the beastie, antichrist, Dr. Doom, whatever. The problem is that most forget to account for the value of hebrew letters based upon their position in the word. Ending values will frequently differ (by a lot) from a character placed in the body of the word. I haven't tried this against Nero's name because I'm lazy.
A more elegant solution, and the theory I subscribe to, comes with an analysis of the culture of the Jews at the time. First, it should be remembered that Revelations was written presumably by John in bad Greek (contrast to the perfect Greek of the Gospel of John, suggesting a less educated author). It is important to keep in mind that Jerusalem was occupied by Romans much to the dismay of the Jewish radicals who felt that their holy spaces had been invaded. The culture was very divisive during this time. Naturally they would feel some resentment toward their conquerors, the Roman Empire.
Now, if Revelations 13:18 were referring to the numerical system rather than some obfuscated numerical value they would have written IVXLCD, all the numerals of the Roman logical value system. Misread during translation this would be 1+5+10+50+100=666. M would not be included because it was an abbreviation for mille, not a numeral unto itself. Mille was later accepted as the numeral for 1,000 but not until later in the life of the Empire.
Following this logic, the number of the beast is actually IVXLCD and would loose meaning in any other (Arabic) notation system as it is a reference to a specific culture and Empire. Based upon this theory, the entire 666 BS is meaningless.
I don't get to take credit for the IVXLCD theory, the concept was passed on to me and I did some verification, but it is the theory I prefer.
