Proving once again that people in the South will deep-fry anything....

Newest Fair Food: Deep-Fried Coca-Cola

"There are fried Twinkies and even fried candy bars.

Now, vendor Abel Gonzales Jr. has come up with a new artery-clogging concoction for the State Fair of Texas. It's fried Coke.

Gonzales deep-fries Coca-Cola-flavored batter. He then drizzles Coke fountain syrup on it. The fried Coke is topped with whipped cream, cinnamon sugar and a cherry. Gonzales said the fried Coke came about just from thinking aloud."

LA County Fair begins in a couple of days, I wonder what fried madness will be available to the adventurous? I'll face that peril. [grin]

Answering my own comment... here is the press release on LA Co. Fair Food:
http://www.lacountyfair.com/2006/ViewPressRelease.asp?PRelId=844

"The everything-on-a-stick theme seems to define Fair food because its portability allows consumers to continue their Fair trek while enjoying a snack. This year’s tasty offerings will feature crispy coconut shrimp on a stick and savory egg rolls on a stick along with past year’s “stuck” favorites: the ever-popular Hot Dog on a Stick, pork chop on a stick, frozen banana on a stick, even a cream puff on a stick.

"The ever-popular Dippin’ Dots® ice cream, flash-frozen into tiny, individual beads has created a special new L.A. County Fair favorite flavor, called froffe-mocha, coffee, toffee, fruitee vanilla. Whew!

"Then there’s the deep-fried phenomenon – if you can deep fry ice cream you can deep fry anything, right? Well in addition to deep-fried Twinkies, Snickers, Oreos and pickles, this year’s Fair will feature – drum roll, please! – deep-fried green olives stuffed with garlic, deep-fried asparagus and deep-fried cauliflower. Those last two might even convince the calorie-conscious Fairguest that fried food can be healthy! Other deep-fried favorites will return this year, including deep-fried avocados and tomatoes and for the apple-a-day crowd, deep-fried apples with real whipped cream."

Taxonomy of Fair Food

Several years ago, [livejournal.com profile] ricemansd and I sat down at the Del Mar Fair and determined the primary defining characteristics of Fair Food:
  • Fried

  • Of Unusual Size

  • On a Stick

  • Something you would never prepare at home

  • To qualify as Fair Food, a comestible needs to have at least three out of four qualities -- the benchmark of all such eats being, of course, the Foot-Long Corn Dog. (Which, in fact, was what we were eating at the time this bit of scientific inquiry was being conducted. It should be noted that the last determinator was added upon consideration that candy floss' natural environment appears to be fairs and *circuses -- while candy floss does roughly qualify under 'on a stick', and is typically larger than your head, (and therefor of unusual size), we had yet to see a fried version... and yet it is, unquestionably a form of Fair Food.

*I personally believe candy floss is made from sugared, recycled clown wigs -- which is just one more reason to fear clowns!

Avid coke-drinker that I am, there are some things I won't try. That's one of them.

I know a chef who decided to see if it was possible to make deep fried macaroni and cheese. Yes, it is possible.

After you make the stuff, you press it into a pan, press ridges into it so you can break it into bars once it's frozen solid. Then you batter dip and fry just long enough to crunchify the batter, and heat the interior to creamy hotness.

I bet you could do it on a stick too.
