Either one of these looks like serious amounts of fun.

Almost as much fun as driving the entire length of Route 66 that is...... :-)

Empire Builder - Chicago to Seattle or Portland

Southwest Chief - Chicago to Los Angeles

California Zephyr - Chicago to San Francisco

Coast Starlight - Los Angeles to Seattle

The Coast Starlight is a wonderful, not too long ride.

The Coast Starlight is actually really affordable. I'm surprised. I've done the Empire builder.

The Cascades is nice too To Vancouver
I can see us easily taking that one.

My uncle was actually on the Empire builder when it derailed in the 80;s on the way here. Again, the cost for riding that doesnt seem much.

Amtrack, Ferries to Alaska, Route 66. we can really envision some fantastic vacations cant we?

The Coast Starlight and the Cascades both sound nice.

If it wouldnt cut into time that I'd get to see you I'd considering taking the Coast Starlight down your way, of course these things are more fun with companions.

I've ridden the Coast Starlight, and loved every mile. I splurged on a sleeper roomette, and the service was exquisite, the food excellent (the wine even better), and I would love to go again.

I've done three out of the four (well, actually my ride on the California Zephyr was the Desert Wind from Chicago to LA, but it's the same route till you get to Salt Lake City), all on the same trip, actually, and they were all absolutely wonderful. I'd like to do the Southwest Chief sometime.

What I'd really give my eyeteeth for is anything close to a reasonably direct route between Seattle and Dallas (no, going through Chicago and/or LA does not count as reasonably direct). Then I could actually enjoy the annual trip to visit my mother. Er, not that I don't enjoy visiting my mother.

Never mind.

I rode the Southwest Chief a number of times in the early '80s; sadly, as an impecunious graduate student, I could only afford coach. It's mostly a pleasant experience, although... well, I remember one occasion on which, every time I finally started dropping off to sleep, a kid in a nearby seat would start playing with his Speak-n-Spell. After I reached a certain level of exhaustion, it became nearly hallucinatory...
