I'm not sure if this is a "spin-off" from the space race though....

The coolest application of Star Trek technology I ever saw in the show was in Voyager, when Ensign Wildman was having her baby and having some trouble. Instead of a C-Section, they just beamed the baby out. I can think of a lot more complications after that, but probably not more complicated than having to cut and sew Momma back together.

It may not be artificial gravity like the scene in "Time Enough for Love" but it probably has a similar effect.

I was just thinking the same thing. I wonder if that would qualify for 'prior art' (or whatever it's called for patents) I'd read that someone tried to patent the water bed, and was laughed out of court.

I suppose if Heinlein had specified the method that Lazurus' ship used as centrifugal force, then it would really be impossible to patent this method. Lord knows they're letting all sorts of stupidity get patented these days...

Now if you could pull off a water-birth within a centrifugal machine, that would be quite a trick!

Ah, what a clever idea: the baby won't come, so we'll just increase the number of g's until the baby rips loose. Hopefully, they've also got a way of neutralizing the effect on Mom's inner ear, or they're going to have one helluva mess to clean off the walls . . . .

I'm with Selene: use the transporter and beam 'em out, then inject some nanobots to seal off the damage before shutting themselves down.

Mod from the simpsons said it best:
