Re: A/C constantly running.

Hi Guys,

I came in today (Monday) to finish up a project I was working on before our big meeting with a potential client tomorrow, and I noticed that there were three or four large air conditioners running the entire time I was here. Since it's a three day weekend, no one is around, why do we need to have the A/C running 24/7? With all the power that all those big computers in that room use, I doubt it is really eco-friendly to run those big units at the same time. And all computers have cooling fans anyway, so why put the A/C for the building in that room? I got a keycard from $facilitiesmanager's desk and shut off the A/C units. I'm sure you guys can deal with it being warm for an hour or two when you come in tomorrow morning. In the future, let's try to be a little more conscientious of our energy usage. Thanks.

RESULT:

Fatalities: Exchange Server, Domain Controllers, a few Sun boxes that I'm not sure of the usage.
Near-Fatalities: Phone Switch, Apps Servers.

Temperature of server room 7AM Tuesday Morning: 90 Degrees Fahrenheit.

I wonder if that guy's related to the Unicoder?

Here's to server admins who don't have environment monitoring on their systems.

I'm shocked that the server room was only at 90 degrees F.

If our (single) AC unit goes out at 10:00am, the two servers with thermal event response capability are in thermal shut down at 10:15am, and the server room is at a toasty 97 degrees (from ~72 degrees) at 10:30am. I can't even imagine how > 5 servers would affect the heat load.

(Also: thank Ghods I have one of three keys to my SR...and the other two are held by people who understand that I will quit on the spot if they ever do something idiotic like that.)

Well, I'm sure the tempurature dropped AFTER some of the servers crashed from thermal overload.........

What a freaking idiot! It's a bit amazing to me that the keycards were so easily accessible. If that had happened while I was working for Intuit both the idiot who turned off the A/C units AND the facility manager would've been canned.

Wow, I'd be pissed at the Facilities guy too.

o_O

We have a pretty girly network/system in a low-tech building at work but there's a big note on our thermostat, "DON'T TURN THIS OFF OVER THE WEEKEND" lest the computers overheat and die, etc. If the temp gets above 80, the a/c turns on.

Hmp, sounds like the place where I used to work!!

Dunno why the frikken machines should have it so good, but then for that matter, why did the IT guy get so bent out of shape when I opened the door to spread the cold air around to those of us who would APPRECIATE it?? *^_^*

ohhhh I feel their pain.

of course, my server room doesn't have extra a/c, it just has whatever the "normal" a/c is for the suite, and the a/c is turned off at 5pm Friday night and back on at 9am Monday morning.

during the summer, there have been many occasions where I've gone into the server room on a Saturday around noon, and been amazed that machines were still functioning and not melted into puddles of goo.

my 'supplemental' cooling system is a 10 inch fan - consumer grade (I bought it at the drug store) that has been running since July 2004 *continuously*

I also have nightmares that the building will burn down because of this fan spontaneously bursting into flame.
