While at Grossmont College in the early 90's, I was lucky enough to be a student of, (and TA to), one Dr. Gary Berkowitz.

Dr. Berkowitz, (or to his students, Uncle Gary), taught Computer Science, as well as Critical Thinking and Neuropsychology. I ended up taking just about every class he offered. He hated to be called anything but "Uncle Gary", and the usual phrase from students was "Wow Uncle Gary" when we were being silly or fippant - which is how he wanted us.

The first class I had from him, I noticed he was wearing a Buckaroo Banazi shirt. So when he gave the role of students, I answered "Blue Blaze Irregular Silverfox, here." He stopped, looked at me, and said "Blue Blaze Irregular Colorado Kid, pleased to meet you", and went back to the role call.

A LOT of the [livejournal.com profile] table_people ended up taking classes from him at one point or another. Outstandingly cool person, and a damn good teacher.

I just got a message from him via LinkedIn, asking how I've been doing in the last 12 years.

Wow indeed Uncle Gary. :-)

Wow indeed! There's a few of my instructors I wish I was in touch with; I doubt I made sufficient impression on any of them that they would actively seek ME out.

What a wonderful compliment!

Wow!! I'm glad to hear this!
I still remember when everyone would come back to the table from his class, and would be excited and happy. (particularly you and jess).

I hope all is well with you today, and maybe see you at Con??

C.

*chuckle* Got a second reply from Uncle Gary, may have to share with you all later :-)

Not gonna be at con. Have Very Important Business in Seattle with [livejournal.com profile] seattlejo, (though I'll be seeing [livejournal.com profile] blackflag669 and [livejournal.com profile] ismarc later that week)

Dr. Berkowitz was/is one of those teachers that is just fun to be with and learn from. Homer Lusk was one too.
