Washington State Ferries Discovers Salt Water Is Not A Steel Preservative
Basically in a nutshell.....
Washington State Ferries has four 80+ year old ex-San Francisco Bay Area car ferries. These are the only ferries they have with a draft shallow enough to serve some of the San Juans.
Well, in the course of Coast Guard inspections, they discovered that in some cases, the paint was about the only thing holding the steel together.
The fun part about this? They were originally planning to fix the ferries, and have no replacement in mind. However, the damage may be to the point it would be cheaper to replace than fix......
....except, once again, there's no replacement planned, and no other WSF ferries that can serve those routes.
