Colorful new names for eight crayons

"Gone is wild watermelon. Now it will be called awesome.

That's just one of the name changes of eight colors in the Crayola 64 box that was announced earlier today at the Toys R Us in Times Square in New York City.

The newly named colors are aimed at appealing to a new generation of children, more than 20,000 of whom picked the names in an online poll.

The Crayola 64 box made its television debut in 1958 on the Captain Kangaroo Show.

Here are the other old names followed by the new names:

laser lemon, super happy
wild tangerine, fun in the sun
screamin' green, giving tree
beaver, bear hug
turquoise blue, happy ever after
hot magenta, famous
orchid, best friends."

Call me old fashioned, but "awesome", "super happy", "fun in the sun", "beaver", "bear hug", "happy ever after", "famous", and "best friends" ARE NOT COLOURS!!! The old names at least SAID what colour the crayon was.

They need to name the brown crayon in this box "ton o' crap"

"Turquoise" IS a blue! It's not some happy little adjective, it's a functional COLOR shade!

I miss the days of Flesh.

You're right! Turquoise IS a colour. "Happy ever after" is NOT

I miss the days of Flesh.

The new names are quite gag-worthy, but I'm not sorry Flesh was renamed. As a kid, I was always very puzzled by that color. Why is it so pale, I wondered.

I just emailed Crayola:

According to http://www.mcall.com/news/local/all-crayons-04092008cn,0,6521343.story , 8 colour names are changing to phrases that honestly don't give a hint in and of themselves to what the colour is. It's unclear if the new name (such as "best friends") is completely replacing the old one ("orchid" in this case), or if it will be listed on the crayon as "original name/new name" (such as "orchid/best friends"). And is this only in the 64-pack, (hopefully) leaving the other packages with clearer naming practices on the crayons? Please clarify. Thank you.

we'll see what they say.

"Best friends" is a color? "Famous"? Crayon names just get stranger and stranger. Those "names" tell me nothing. Why not just call them names "George" and "Mary"? At least those are names and they're no less meaningful in this context.

I think this calls for my "don't drive off the dock, stupid" icon.
