Got a big bottom? Now a reason to be glad

"A type of fat that accumulates around the hips and bottom may actually offer some protection against diabetes, U.S. researchers said on Tuesday.

They said subcutaneous fat, or fat that collects under the skin, helped to improve sensitivity to the hormone insulin, which regulates blood sugar.

Mice that got transplants of this type of fat deep into their abdomens lost weight and their fat cells shrank, even though they made no changes in their diet or activity levels."

That's at least the third or fourth research paper that seems to point in that direction. Rats which were genetically altered to have a hard time producing fat cells, got diabetic on a heavy diet while the unualtered rats just got fat. Young adults (18-20ish?) were found to have a striking rise in measures that lead to/indicate metabolic syndrome, but most especially the boys (who were naturally leaner). I think there may have been another one I can't remember. But the thrust seemed to be that overeating (at least relative to what your fat cells can absorb) is what gives you insulin resistance etc., not being fat per se.

Meanwhile, exercise is still recommended for both weight control and mood elevation. Cesar Milan says a tired dog is a happy dog...and that goes for people exercise too.
