"A large crystal skull believed by its owner to have healing powers was recently stolen from Kindred Spirits, a New Age shop where it was on loan.
The theft has perplexed store employees and the skull's owner, Seal Beach resident Don Marr, because of the object's spiritual significance and the low-key character of the shop's regulars.
"We have zero shoplifting in here, and I have no idea why anyone would take something as lovely as that," said Persis Newland, the shop's owner.
The skull, which Marr named Solar Ray, had been on loan at Kindred Spirits for about four months. It was housed on an altar beside other items of significance in the store's classroom area.
The skull was used in occasional crystal reading courses at the store and was considered one of Kindred Spirits' prized objects.
"He was on an altar, and he just enjoyed being here," employee Kristen Nestor, who supervises the store's weekly crystal reading classes, said of the skull. "He participated in our classes.
"He's quite an old skull. He's about four or five hundred years old. He likes to travel and things like that. He was here for about four months, just enjoying everyone who comes through here."
About two weeks ago, store employees noticed the skull was missing."
