While at Grossmont College in the early 90's, I was lucky enough to be a student of, (and TA to), one Dr. Gary Berkowitz.

Dr. Berkowitz, (or to his students, Uncle Gary), taught Computer Science, as well as Critical Thinking and Neuropsychology. I ended up taking just about every class he offered. He hated to be called anything but "Uncle Gary", and the usual phrase from students was "Wow Uncle Gary" when we were being silly or fippant - which is how he wanted us.

The first class I had from him, I noticed he was wearing a Buckaroo Banazi shirt. So when he gave the role of students, I answered "Blue Blaze Irregular Silverfox, here." He stopped, looked at me, and said "Blue Blaze Irregular Colorado Kid, pleased to meet you", and went back to the role call.

A LOT of the [livejournal.com profile] table_people ended up taking classes from him at one point or another. Outstandingly cool person, and a damn good teacher.

I just got a message from him via LinkedIn, asking how I've been doing in the last 12 years.

Wow indeed Uncle Gary. :-)

In the constant pissing contest between Dubai and Doha, Dubai may have gone somewhere that Doha is unwilling to go.....

Hooters to open in Dubai

"Hooters, a US restaurant chain famous for its scantily clad waitresses, may open this year in Dubai as it expands to the Arabic peninsula for the first time, the company's local partner said on Tuesday.

"I am trying to secure a location to open one restaurant this year. A year from now I will have two to three potential locations," Jamal Al Shaheen, a Kuwaiti investor, who has the franchise rights for Hooters in Dubai, told Dow Jones Newswires.

Waitresses at Hooters, which describes itself as a "beach-theme" restaurant, wear tight revealing tank tops and skimpy shorts."

I suspect most of the customer base is going to be:

1) Lonely expat westerners

2) Saudi (and a few Qatari and Baharain) Businessmen.

And I suspect most of the waitress staff are going to be "Natashas", the eastern European / Russian women that seem to be popular in Dubai as waitresses / casino staff / hostesses / prostitutes. Actually, I'd be willing to bet on it
