"You begged your parents to buy them, you played with them, you carefully combed their silken manes, and now you can put them in your underwear drawer. Toy maker Hasbro is coming out with a line of My Little Pony lingerie and sleepwear -- for adults.
Introduced in 1982, the pastel-colored plastic equines with one prettily patterned hind quarter are the company's most popular brand. We know childhood nostalgia is big -- take Patricia Field's Barbie-inspired line, for example. It makes sense (and cents): The little angels who saved their pennies to buy Blossom and Cotton Candy ponies in 1985 are the "Sex and the City"-watching, disposable-income-spending lawyers and stockbrokers of today.
We haven't seen the MLP styles yet, but we're curious to see how much girlie cuteness Hasbro can cram onto a pair of bikini briefs. Will grown women really buy underwear that reminds them of being seven years old? Will men find it sexy? Someone at Hasbro is obviously betting on it -- which, when you think about it, is a bit disturbing in itself. But if you're craving a scantily clad stroll down memory lane, saddle up and gallop over to Urban Outfitters where the line will make its U.S. debut later this year.
