A couple nights ago while watching "Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind", [livejournal.com profile] seattlejo commented about how Hayao Miyazaki tends to bludgeon his viewers occasionally over the head with enviromental themes.

Today I was discussing this with a friend, when he comments "What would happen if Miyazaki did either "Wall*E" or "Toy Story"?"

My reply was that you could pretty much just call the movie "All Humans Are Evil And Will Destroy the Earth" and be done with it.

I haven't actually SEEN Wall-e but understand that it's set in the future after humans destroyed the earth & left it...

Uhhh, yeah, that's one problem my roommate has with my Ghibli films. ENVIRONMENT GOOD. PEOPLE BAD.

In Ghibli Toy Story, maybe the neighbor kid with the rocket would set his yard on fire and the woods nearby would burn down and the toys would band together to stop the blaze?

Actually, I've found that it's a theme pretty common in Japanese sci-fi anime/manga, especially the more epic ones, during the 80s. They seem extremely fascinated by all things dystopian/post-apocalyptic.
