OOPS: Magazines Recall Poisonous Recipes

"Novice chefs beware. With the popular slow food movements, return to old fashioned ingredients, and accompanying gourmet recipes for the untrained cook in magazines, kitchen adventures may be more complicated than you think

On Thursday, a popular Swedish food magazine recalled 10,000 store copies after a mistake in one of its cake recipes left four people sick, dizzy and in pain.

"There was a mistake in a recipe for apple cake. Instead of calling for two pinches of nutmeg it said 20 nutmeg nuts were needed," Matmagasinet's chief editor Ulla Cocke told Agence France-Presse."

Although I found nothing on Snopes about this, I'm more than a tad skeptical, not least because of the sheer physical effort it would take to grate 20 nutmegs for one recipe, and the fact that it would seriously unbalance the wet/dry ingredient ratio. Also, a similar incident was detailed a dozen years ago in James White's The Galactic Gourmet.

It scares me that someone was slavish enough to have actually followed that recipe. Or more than one someone, although one cake could have been eaten by four people. Still, yeek.

Khavrinen has a point, processing the nutmegs would be a lot of work. Grinding the nutmegs by food processor maybe?
