Yes, you actually read ME writing that.

To be precise, the parental controls in Leopard 10.5 suck. Oh, it's a great idea.....when it works.

Problems so far though:

It doesn't pick up new applications. At all.

It interferes with the save ability of some educational games. Which means if Little Bit wants to play, she has to start all over again.

So parental controls, off. And a LOT of applications are on lockdown.

I figure for websurfing I can use BumperCar. But I need to find an app that will allow me to set time limits on her account. And something to act as a filter for applications and the like.

Bother.

There's actually a *really* good program already out there that does what you want. I'll post a link as soon as I find it again (can't recall off the top of my head what it's called).

Here you go - http://www.intego.com/contentbarrier/

I've used this program before (when I worked for the roofer, installed it on all of his computers for his kids). It works really well, and it's very easy to use.

Until I get the bugs worked out of Squid, ... and even *with* Squid, I'm using OpenDNS on my kids' computers.

Nothing to install; you set the filters on their website (black- or white-list known sites as you see fit, too), and point their browsers' DNS entries to their site.

Cheap, free, and easy.
