Well, got the transmission fluid changed. (and oil too).

It's not slipping anymore.

But it's STILL rattling, almost a wind noise sound, that dies away as the speed goes up.

I'd say it was a belt, but the sound comes from a side of the car with no belts.

Right now, I'm wondering if it's a bearing. Or the belt is loose / worn and I'm not hearing it properly.

Or it IS the transmission and I'm screwed.

Tranny maybe just needs an adjustment? It's old, and wearing out some. Right now compare a replacement cost to replacing the car itself, I guess. If the tran is worn but still has some months left, maybe take the time now to start saving for down payment or replacement. Good that you have lead time to prepare.
