Today's Seattle Times had an article about the post-Prop 8 protests in California and elsewhere. One of the comments caught my eye:

"Traditional marriage has been around for 6,000 years and it has worked. The majority has spoken"

So just WHAT FORM of "Traditional marriage" are you talking about anyway? The Greek and Roman attitude was that if the couple considered themselves married, they were, and no civil anything was required. Polygamy dates back to before recorded history - far older than 6,000 years. Same-sex marriage unions? Also date back to Roman times. The Celts?? At least ten different forms of marriage, with provisions for multiple partners AND provisions for same-sex unions.

As for Church involvement? THAT only dates back to around 1545, 463 years.

So I have to ask, just what KIND of "traditional marriage" are they talking about? Because that 6,000 years covers a whole lot of different roles, types, and forms of marriage, both civil and religious, both male/female and same-sex.

Meh. "The majority?" 52.anything% is so barely a majority that if you had 10 voters in the same room, you'd have 5 on each side.

Besides, civil rights shouldn't be subjects to the whims of a majority... *grumble* Anyway yeah, these people I swear...

Ha ha ha ha ha. "Traditional marriage has worked"?! Sorry, couldn't help but laugh. I'm very happily divorced!

(I hope you don't mind my comment. I found this entry via [livejournal.com profile] winterlion and couldn't help but comment!)
