More reasons why I'm an ex-Catholic......

Educated Catholics have sown dissent and confusion in the Church, claims bishop

"Bishop O'Donoghue, who has recently published a report on how to renew Catholicism in Britain, argued that mass education has led to "sickness in the Church and wider society".

"What we have witnessed in Western societies since the end of the Second World War is the development of mass education on a scale unprecedented in human history - resulting in economic growth, scientific and technological advances, and the cultural and social enrichment of billions of people's lives," he said.

"However, every human endeavor has a dark side, due to original sin and concupiscence. In the case of education, we can see its distortion through the widespread dissemination of radical scepticism, positivism, utilitarianism and relativism.

Reminds me of my chatchism classes and being chewed out for daring to question the *why* of something rather than blindly accepting it. (St. Rose of Lima, Simi Valley CA, late 70's)

Cardinal Stafford: Obama is 'apocalyptic'

"“For the next few years, Gethsemane will not be marginal. We will know that garden,” Stafford said, comparing America’s future with Obama as president to Jesus’ agony in the garden. “On November 4, 2008, America suffered a cultural earthquake.”

Cardinal Stafford said Catholics must deal with the “hot, angry tears of betrayal” by beginning a new sentiment where one is “with Jesus, sick because of love.”

The lecture, hosted by the Pontifical John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family, pertained to Humanae Vitae, a papal encyclical written by Pope Paul VI in 1968 and celebrating its 40 anniversary this year."

So if I'm reading this right, education is a bad thing? Especially humanistic education?

That would explain why I go around in circles with [livejournal.com profile] sad1225.

Every time I think I might try stepping back into a church, one of my erstwhile co-religionists pulls some crap like this. Fortunately, [profile] americanstd and I are happy to be celebrating a good heathen Jul this year.

Gods. Teenage emo's bad enough coming from 16-year-olds, now we have to deal with it from a centuries-old institution.

Yep. The bishop's and cardinal's "thinking" have a lot to do with how *I* got to be an ex-Catholic, too. The Pope (I can't even remember which one now--who was Pope in 1979) was just the last straw when he said the only way for homssexuals and bisexuals (such as myself) to be Catholics in good standing and hope for God's mercy was to be celibate and "pay fervently." What's sad is these are highly educated men saying "Education is bad because it teaches you to think for yourself." It does--but have you forgotten that one of the church's teachings is that God gave human's reason so we could use it? *sigh*
