Right now, I'm deeply ashamed to be a native Californian.

It boggles my mind that the court would uphold a proposition designed to take away the rights of a minority.

Hopefully Washington will move forward on this, not backward.

My ability to marry my partner is NOT THREATENED by giving same-sex people the right to marry THEIR partners. It's stupid that California would be so regressive in this matter.

Outside LA and SF, you know what kind of people live in California. The common people. The salt of the earth. You know. Morons.

That's kind of insulting, especially when the Yes on Prop 8 folks lied, etc...

Sorry you feel that way. I'm cranky but I feel that the voting landscape backs me up. Here's a map of results by county:

How many of those counties are ones which were targeted by "your marriage is under threat!" messages?

And how many of those counties are predominately Catholic or fundamentalist who listen to what their pastors tell them?

Also? Mono County and the one next to it voted against Prop 8... that's not SF or LA.

On the other hand, San Diego, 3rd largest city in the state, home to a very large GLBT community, voted FOR Prop 8. Sacramento, state capitol, also voted for it.

There are parts of California that are very very conservative. And the anti-prop 8 people made some tactical mistakes and assumptions that came back to bite them hard on the rear.

San Diego also has a decently sized Conservative population... And, of course, had Darrel Issa as their Congress person.

Could be said that the Conservatives outvoted the GLBT people.

Darrel Issa, Duncan Hunter, Brian Bilbray... (used to live in San Diego you see) I know just how conservative parts of SD can be.

Yeah, I used to live in San Diego County (but was too young to vote at the time), also used to live in Los Angeles (County and, for a time, city).

I don't anymore... but that's because I couldn't find work there... at least not in my field.

Being an economic refugee from California myself, I completely understand

Beats me. Maybe Yosemite and surrounding businesses value Gay tourist income. Those two counties only account for about 6,000 votes total.

I'm not ashamed. I read some more details, and what they upheld was that the process to change the constitution was valid. Thus, they followed the law.

I'm disappointed that my attitudes don't agree with the rest of the state, but I'm sure that the conservative part of the state will come around, especially as the state supreme court continues to prohibit discrimination based on orientation in other areas.

But remember: they said nothing on the proposition itself (that wasn't the case) ... they ruled on the process, and legal experts all though that avenue of attack was a longshot.
