Gambling and other oddities
May. 29th, 2003 09:32 amI won the California State Lottery today. Well, I won part of it. $6.00 worth to be exact.
On the drive to work, after getting my morning Diet Coke and collecting my winnings, I reflected on my gambling habits. Now, I'm no William Bennett, (nowhere near that rich or that much of a hypocrite), but I do occasionally indulge.
$2.00 a week on tickets, always a simular set of numbers, (my age, my daughters age, 5, 23, 42, and a couple of other numbers that are important to me) So $104 a year.
For the last five years, I've won anywhere from $120 to $200 a year in the lotto. So I ususally break even.
I occasionally go up to the Indian Casinos near my house. Sometimes even to Las Vegas. If I go up to an Indian Casino, I bring $40 to $60 with me. I almost always leave with $40 to $80 in winnings. In Vegas, I put the money I want to spend gambling in one pocket, my winnings in another, and quit when the first pocket is empty. I usually end up breaking even.
So for all intents and purposes, gambling for me is a break-even thing. I never win big, but I don't seem to lose big either. Go figure.
