Who the fucking hell's bright idea was this???

Me, my lab's rep in CS, (who used to have my job), and the main AV geek for the institute just got emails from the lab boss. Seems she volunteered to host a WS educational conference, and wants all three of us to be in the lab from 8am to 5pm to hold her dammed hand for it. The date for this? A Saturday. To be exact, Saturday, August 30th. Which happens to be the start of a bloody three-day weekend !!!!

Which means any plans I had, (like, oh, maybe September War, or spending a long weekend with Little Bit, or anything other than being in this place), for that weekend are now on hold. Gee, sure glad I decided not to go to Torcon after all, getting my planefare back would be such a pain.

Newsflash, oh clueless one, just be cause you don't have a life outside of the dammed lab doesn't mean everyone else doesn't either.

I suspect tomorrow's meeting is going to be interesting........

Suggest that you tell them no, you won't be available, it's a holiday weekend and you already have plans to be out of town. (Details of such plans being none of their business)

Oh, I'd *love* to - except for the fact they pulled the "occasional weekends and nights" clause of my employment contract on me. Which means my choices basically are:

1) Work it and accept overtime, (time and a half or double)
2) Work it and accept comp time.
3) Not work it and be terminated for cause.

I think I'll have a talk with the labour board later in the week. At least if I do work it, misery would have company.

Then I'd say call HR and complain that she's assigning time for a major holiday weekend that is less than three weeks away. That is NOT reasonable - people HAVE to make travel plans farther in advance than that.

Perhaps tomorrows meeting...

Perhaps the meeting needs to define the term "occasional".

No news flash here, but you NEED a new job.

I know dear, I know. And I *am* looking. Economy isn't happy right now though. (sigh) Not a happy gund I fear.

Talking to the labour board sounds like a very good idea. Double time not comp time. You need the money! Blessed Be, Angelique

Is this conference directly related to your job? Yeah, have a li'l chit-chat with the labour board. And if it winds up that you work this stupid bint's pet project, make certain you lay the guilt on real thick. "Let's see -- right now, we would have been doing This Activity with my daughter. That activity we had planned for the last four months..." "Sigh - this is about when my friend BillyBob would have been coming by our camp and sharing our (reasonably-named cookout food), and bringing some of his homemade (other cookout food)." "I wonder what Li'l Bit is doing right now, since we weren't able to attend Event as planned?"

I agree

I have to agree with CelticDragonfly, tell them that you are sorry but you already have out of town plans that you won't be able to change.

I did. My options according to the lab manager and HR, (lab manager was also put on notice from boss she had to work it as well), was work it or be fired. Growl.

Lack of planning on her part does not make it an emergency on your part either! Blessed Be, Angelique

This is not a lack of planning, This is a misuse of authority and a deepseated need to control other people.

At least! Blessed Be, Angelique

I'd inform them that you'd planned vacation for the long weekend and have already made your plans. I understand the weekend once in awhile and such, but a long holiday should have more than 3 weeks notice before it's taken away.

I'm still willing to drive.....

Or, if they absolutly insist, request/demand double time plus compensation pay for changing all of your travel plans....

To me, occasional nights & weekends usally means an emergancy. This is NOT an emergancy. If SHE "volunteered to host a WS educational conference", then SHE can do it. YOU are NOT obligated. If SHE is not able to do this by herself then she should not have volunteered.

If you want, I'll go in and explain it to her ::grin:: (I've been in a slightly sadistic frame of mind lately...can you tell?)
