It's Still Stupid
Nov. 26th, 2003 09:29 amKNX-AM had a small story about the County of Los Angeles banning the terms "Master" and "Slave" from equipment purchased from their vendors, mandating that they be replaced with "Primary" and "Secondary".
Seems not only are they mandating this for computer equipment, but video equipment as well. (Gee, think someone should use this to mandate electric vehicles only, because regular gas engines have that horrid "master cylinder"....)
This was done because someone in the LA County probation department complained about the terms being offensive.
You know, if I worked for the County of Los Angeles, I'd have to find someway to object to the terms "Primary" and "Secondary" being offensive and in need of removal, to point out how stupid this policy is.
(Update #1 - it has been pointed out that "Primary" is an election process and is thus a partisan term. Since the workplace should remain non-partisan, the term "primary" can be offensive. "Secondary" means High School, and is thus a slam on County of Los Angeles workers, calling them under-educated........)
(Update #2 - There's an article on this at the LA Daily News site: County deletes 'master-slave' PC term)
