Spider's getting old and cranky, and forgetting about things he's written about in the past. There's excitement over the X-Prize, there's excitement over nanotechnology, there was a lot of excitement over the internet until grandmothers started emailing requests for fresh baby pictures to be put on the website.
Is there less eagerness for interplanetary exploration right now? Yeah. Vikings were less eager to visit Greenland after the first colony died. Right now the only way to get to Mars is as a big government project and most people have realized that's a dead end. So we're looking at other ways. One of them is to start over and build a sustainable infrastructure instead of a fantastic stunt machine.
