Finally went to see "Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy" today.

First, the trailers. I already saw the "Episode III" trailer, so no comment. "Serenity" looked good, but I've never seen "Firefly" yet, so I really can't say much about it. May have to get the "Firefly" DVD's soon though.

And now on to "H2G2"......

First off, if someone is expecting an exact clone of the radio series, BBC series, or book, they're going to be disappointed. But, since none of those are clones of each other, I don't see it as a problem.

I think it could have done better with either an entirely US or entirely UK cast though. This half-and-half thing really seemed to underscore the difference between American Humor and British Humour - and they don't mesh well at times.

I also admit I was very uncomfortable with the romantic subplot between Arthur and Trillian, but that's because I'm rather raw on that subject right now.

Zaphod was just hateful. Period. I *don't* like this version of Zaphod. However, I didn't have much of a problem with the rest of the cast. I thought they mostly did a good job.

I also liked the tip of the hat they did to the BBC series. The use of "Journey of the Sorcerer", which is always going to be identified with H2G2. Having the same actor who played Arthur Dent in the BBC series as the image for the Margrethean answering service. Seeing the original "Marvin" robot in the queue at the Vogon office. And the interesting places where Douglas Adams's image showed up.

And I admit, I really, really giggled over the "Yarn" scene.

Not as good as I would have liked. But a lot better than I was afraid of. Is it good enough to greenlight "Restaurant at the End of the Universe", (which they left it wide open for)?? Unknown at this time - but I would like to see that one eventually.
