Oct. 16th, 2003 02:56 pmI've mentioned before that research scientists have roughly the same social skills as a 2-year old. (though personally I think Little Bit is better behaved than certain of the people I work with.)
A great case in point today. I needed to troubleshoot a problem with three posters that had been turned into PDF files and posted on our website. Well, turns out that original Photoshop files used were the ones used to make the original posters - and were sized for 70"x 36"printing. The smallest PDF was 18 MB, the largest was 35 MB.
Well, two of the files are black text on a white background. Easy enough to size down, so I sized the original photoshop files to 11"x 8.5" and recreated the PDF files. They're now 800k and 1.2 MB PDF files, perfectly reasonable.
However, that big 35 MB file? Well, the poster for that one was created by Dr. Idiot Boss, who gets upset if she thinks her sacred name and work will be minimised in any way, shape, or form. To top it all off, that poster was created from her PowerPoint slides, where she uses gold text on a dark green or blue background.
Which means that I could only get it to about 40% of it's original 70"x36" size before the text becomes completely unreadable. And to change then colours is going to mean having to recreate the entire thrice-be-dammed poster. My recommendation was either to remove it from the website, or place a warning next to the file link about the size. The lab manager also figured it was the best way to handle it.
Dr. Idiot Boss however, threw a tantrum about the very idea that we remove the poster or place any kind of warning about the size.
End result - I have to take the original graphics and powerpoint slides, and recreate the entire dammed poster from scratch, but with black text on a white background. Otherwise, she won't have her poster on-line, and That's Just Not Acceptable.
Growl.

Date: 2003-10-17 04:16 am (UTC)But I'm working on bringing them up to the level of a Feza-yr-old someday, however old that turns out to be. Doesn't sound like there's much hope for this one though.
