Dec. 4th, 2003 05:37 pmIf you're an Atheist and live in Maryland, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, or Texas, it may interest you to know that according to those state's constitutions, you cannot hold or keep public office.

It gets better. The Massachusetts State Constitution states:
Any every denomination of Christians, demeaning themselves peaceably, and as good subjects of the commonwealth, shall be equally under the protection of the law: and no subordination of any one sect or denomination to another shall ever be established by law."
So, I presume that if one is a Non-Christian in Massachusetts, they're out of luck.
South Carolina only mandates that anyone holding the office of Governor or Lt. Governor must not deny "the existence of the Supreme Being; ..."
You know, I'm not an atheist, and I find these annoying.
