Mild Book Snarkage......

Finished reading "Eragon" over the weekend.
Originally saw it in Doha, didn't see much point to it. Finally got curious enough to read it here.
It's not......bad........or good. The plotline feels like someone tossed "Lord of the Rings", "Dragonriders of Pern" and "Earthsea" in a blender and rewrote the result. It's inconsistant, off-balance on occasion, and the title character is a MAJOR "Mary Sue", (not surprising, the author even admits he based it on himself). And it's not boring, just not exciting either, just kinda eh.
What I can't understand was why it was published in the first place. I've read much better amateur and fanfic. I can see why his parents published it on their family press. I don't see why it got picked up by a mainstream press though. Much less a movie made of it. There's a LOT better - and better written - fantasy out there, and a LOT better "Young Adult" fantasy as well. Unless the "written by a 15 year old prodigy" aspect is part of the marketing.
I may read the 2nd book when it comes out in paperback, but other than that, I don't see why it's got everyone interest.
