Okay, granted that some may see me as a clueless unmarried hetrosexual with questionable religious beliefs and almost (gasp!) liberal beliefs on some subjects.

That being said, after seeing the media hype over Brittney "Oops I screwed up again" Spears' quickie marriage/annulment in Vegas, I wonder how on earth people can say that allowing Gays and Lesbians the right to marry their partners will somehow destroy marriage.

I mean, how in the world is letting people who love each other and want to build a lifetime comittment supposed to be **WORSE** than Spears and her friends "Oops, sorry, this was just a joke that went too far" marriage to each other?? Personally, I think *that* caused more damage to the spirit and intention of marriage than any number of Gays and Lesbians marrying could.

I guess in the minds of some people though, it's all okay, because it was a single man and woman getting married "as a joke", rather than a man and a man, or a woman and a woman, getting married because they want to spend their lives and build a future together.

Blegh

While it's far from all, a significant fraction of the protection of marriage crowd is also pretty strongly anti-divorce/annullment.

They're afraid of gay marriage because that would be something respectable for gays to do, and that if they are allowed to make a homestead they may start to look respectable to their neighbors. If someone gets inseminated, they may even raise children to be gay! And start corrupting their innocent children!

Insert that other bit of stupidity here...not the one about the car...

Not to defend Britney specifically...

I know of several other cases of mixed-gender buddies going to Las Vegas marriage chapels on a lark, and not realizing/understanding/cluing in on the fact that in Vegas (if not all of Nevada), the official files the paperwork, not the married couple.

The last case I know of, personally, involved a pair at Faire - they went to Vegas during the week, giggled down an aisle, and tossed the paperwork away after the ceremony. They were very surprised to receive their marriage certificate in the mail the following week, and did a simple annulment at the LA county courthouse.
